Summary

It is a melancholy spring for Commissioner Arcadipane. Every street, every bar, every tavern in the city is a memory. He who where others collapse has always found "land of conquest", now feels tired; his intelligence, as humble as it is obstinate, seems to have fallen asleep. To awaken it from torpor is an episode of violence as there are many. Behind which, however, hides an evil so senseless as to extinguish the words in the mouth. Vincenzo Arcadipane is fifty-five years old, a failed marriage behind him and a future that does not promise much.
