Eight-year-old Gabby has never been allowed outside. Ever since she was a small puppy, she has been kept a prisoner inside the home of an elderly married couple. When Gabby's owners are forced to move into a nursing home, Gabby gets her first taste of freedom and a chance at a new life. But it isn't long before her new owners are unable to cope with the needs of this traumatised little dog. Arriving at the animal sanctuary run by Barby Keel, Gabby is terrified of the outside world. Unable to go to the toilet outside, to bark or even to play, Barby realises that Gabby has never learnt how to be a dog. Using her years of experience, love, and the help of rescue dog Harry, Barby slowly begins to unlock the happy spirit that has been trapped inside Gabby. But before long, Barby discovers a lump in her breast. Facing one of the most difficult decisions of her life, Barby seeks solace in caring for Gabby.
