BBC drama based on the novel by Charles Dickens. Lizzie Hexam (Lesley Dunlop) and Bella Wilfer (Jane Seymour) are two women looking for happiness. Lizzie has her eyes on two men, resulting in tragic consequences, and to make things worse, her father has been accused of murder. Meanwhile Bella enters into an arranged marriage with the owner of a refuse-recycling firm. As the two women's lives intertwine, a complex story of love and money emerges.
