The twins Emma and Alice are separated in 1945 while fleeing East Prussia. Both believe the other did not survive. Emma grew up in West Berlin, Alice in a home in the GDR. It was not until twelve years later that they surprisingly found themselves again. Through Alice, Emma meets the East Berlin physicist Julius Laakmann. When Julius witnesses a kidnapping, he finds himself caught between the fronts of the secret services. Then Alice disappears without a trace.
