Every August in North Berwick a raft race is held on a suitable Saturday when the tide is full in the late afternoon. 10 or more teams each make their raft from old barrels or polystyrene blocks, and on the signal the crews paddle furiously over a triangular course from the shore to a bouy, to the harbour wall and back to shore. The fastest team receives the main prize, but a separate prize is given for the best fancy dress. Crew members and audience all enjoy a lot of fun, spoiled sometimes by rain.
