The decade of the 1970s was dominated by confrontations between unions and Governments. This book covers all the significant miners' experiences since 1969, including the unofficial strikes of 1969 and 1970, the two national strikes and the strikes against pit closures in 1981. It describes the working of the National Union of Mineworkers and its struggle for power. It also illuminates the parts played in this struggle by Michael McGahey, Arthur Scargill, Lawrence Daly, Emlyn Williams, and many other miners. The book contains 57 illustrations of miners' leaders and of mining conditions which convey the drama of mining.
